Ichiro Ueno

Mr. Ichiro Ueno is Chairperson of the Board of the SANNO Institute of Management, President of SANNO College, President of All Japan Federation of Management Consulting Organizations, as well as Standing Executive Director of Society of Japanese Value Engineering (SJVE).

Mr. Ichiro Ueno graduated from the Keio University in 1948. After working for a business corporation, a non-profit organization, and a government organization, he participated in the management of SANNO College that was founded by his father, Mr. Yoichi Ueno, who introduced Taylor’s scientific management to Japan. Mr. Ueno succeeded the position of chairperson when his father passed away in 1957, seven years after the College foundation. Mr. Ueno introduced American management theories and educational/training methodologies, including Creative Problem Solving, Value Engineering, Managerial Grid, and Management by Objectives etc. in both academic and business fields. Along with that, he has expanded SANNO from a two years college to a well recognized educational institute that has the graduate school of management, the four year and two year colleges, in addition to the consulting division and the distance education division. In particular the distance education division has the largest annual enrollment number of 350,000 in Japan.

In 1959, after a visit to General Electric Corp. in the U.S., Mr. Ueno initiated the research on VE and the development of its educational program for the purpose of introducing VE in Japanese Industry. He translated "Techniques of Value Analysis & Engineering" written by Mr. L. D. Miles, which was the first book on VE translated into Japanese language. Since 1964, SANNO commenced to provide VE workshop seminars and VE made rapid expansion among Japanese industrial circles. More than 1,000 companies have participated in VE training programs sponsored by SANNO.

In 1980, the official Value Society in Japan: Society of Japanese Value Engineering (SJVE) was established under Ministry of International Trade and Industry’s authorization as a public-service corporation. Mr. Ueno assumed the post of President of the Society. When Mr. Miles passed away on August 1, 1985, the Japanese Government presented him a posthumous medal, the Third Class of the Order of the Sacred Treasure for his tremendous contribution to the development of VE in Japanese industrial sector. Mr. Ueno worked very hard on this award project, and as a result of his efforts, it came to fruition. In 1999, Mr. Ueno was recognized as Fellow of SAVE International because of all his efforts and contributions towards the advancement of VE national and internationally. In 2000, he left the position of SJVE President but remained as one of the board members.

Mr. Ueno has also received awards from the Government of Japan for his contribution to the development of Japanese higher and professional education including Medal with Blue Ribbon from the Minister of International Trade and Industry, Award of the Minister of the State for Management and Coordination Agency, and Award of Minister of Education. Mr. Ueno’s contribution to management education has been recognized from several overseas organizations. In 1988, he received Taylor Key Award from the Society for Advanced Management. Other Asian management consultant organizations such as Asian Institute of management, Association of Management Consultants in Japan, All Japan Federation of Management Consulting Organizations, and Korean Management Association have sent Mr. Ueno letters of appreciation and plaques of appreciation.
